A native bridge withdrawal moves your tokens from a rollup back to its settlement chain. On most chains that settle on Ethereum it takes about 7 days. You'll make two or three transactions, and you'll need to come back to finish.
The wait is how rollups stay secure. It gives time for an invalid withdrawal to be challenged before the tokens are released. Why withdrawals wait
Before you start
- Plan for the wait. The review screen shows the Transfer time for your route. Upgrades to the chain can add more time.
- Have gas on both chains. You pay a network fee on the rollup to start. You pay again on the settlement chain to prove and finalize. Network fees
- Keep access to your wallet. The withdrawal shows in Activity for the wallet that started it. Superbridge doesn't send reminders, so make a note to come back.
- Need it sooner? Other routes usually arrive in minutes, for a provider fee. Faster alternatives
Step 1: Start the withdrawal
Choose your rollup in From and its settlement chain in To. Enter an amount, then select the Native bridge route.
The review screen shows the Transfer time and Network fees. Select Start.
For longer withdrawals, a screen then lists what's involved: multiple transactions, long wait times, and that you can't cancel. Select the I understand the requirements. checkbox, then select I understand, continue. Confirm the transaction in your wallet.
Your withdrawal is now in progress. You can safely close Superbridge.
Step 2: Wait
What happens next depends on the chain:
- OP Stack chains first wait for the rollup to post its latest state to the settlement chain. Activity shows Waiting for state root or Waiting for dispute game. This can take from about an hour to half a day, depending on the chain. Then you prove.
- Other chains, including Arbitrum, have one long wait with no prove step. Skip to Step 4 when it ends.
Step 3: Prove
OP Stack chains only.
When the first wait ends, Activity shows Action needed and a Prove button. Select Prove and confirm the transaction in your wallet. This transaction is on the settlement chain, so you need gas there.
Proving shows the settlement chain that your withdrawal is real. It starts the challenge period.
Challenge period
After you prove, your withdrawal waits in the challenge period. Activity shows In challenge period. On chains that settle on Ethereum this is usually about 7 days.
During this time the rollup's state can be disputed. If a dispute succeeds, or the chain upgrades its proof system, your withdrawal may need to be proved again. You'll see it in the steps, with a note explaining why. When a withdrawal resets
Step 4: Finalize
When the wait is over, Activity shows Action needed and a Finalize button. Select Finalize and confirm the transaction in your wallet.
Your tokens arrive on the settlement chain as soon as the transaction confirms. There's no deadline for finalizing; your tokens stay safe until you do.
How it differs by chain
| Chain type | Transactions | Typical wait |
|---|---|---|
| OP Stack | Start, Prove, Finalize | An hour to half a day, then about 7 days |
| Arbitrum | Start, Finalize | About 7 days |
| Other chains (Linea, Polygon AggLayer) | Start, Finalize | Hours to a day |
Times depend on each chain's settings. A chain that settles on another rollup, such as Base, may use different periods. The review screen always shows the estimate for your route.
You can't cancel a withdrawal
Once you start, a withdrawal can't be cancelled or sped up. Superbridge doesn't own or control native bridge contracts. The only way to get your tokens is to complete the remaining steps.
Faster alternatives
Third-party bridges send you tokens on the settlement chain within minutes. They usually charge a provider fee, which is itemised before you confirm. You'll find them next to the Native bridge route in the route list. Choosing a route
