Occasionally a withdrawal loses progress: it has to be proved again, or its wait starts over. Your tokens are safe when this happens. You only need to repeat the step the app asks for.
There are two causes: a dispute game that didn't hold up, or an upgrade to the chain.
Dispute games
On OP Stack chains with fault proofs, the rollup posts its state as a dispute game. Each game is a claim: "this is the state of the rollup at this point". A claim that's wrong can be challenged.
When you Prove a withdrawal, you point to one of these games. The withdrawal can only be finalized once that game has survived the challenge period.
Invalid games
Superbridge checks each game before using it and ignores games with a wrong claim. Rarely, a game can still turn out to be invalid after you've proved against it, for example if it loses a challenge.
When that happens, your proof no longer counts. The Prove step comes back and Activity shows Action needed. Your step history keeps the earlier proof, so you can see what happened.
Prove again
- Open the withdrawal in Activity.
- Select Prove and confirm the transaction in your wallet. This is on the settlement chain, so you need gas there.
- Wait for the challenge period again. Activity shows In challenge period.
- Select Finalize when it's ready.
The new challenge period starts from your new proof.
Fault proof upgrades
OP Stack chains upgrade their proof system from time to time. Some upgrades reset the progress of every withdrawal that's already under way. When one affects you, the steps show a note with the upgrade's date and one of these titles:
| Note | What changed |
|---|---|
| Fault proofs upgrade | The chain switched to fault proofs |
| Fault proofs configuration changed | The chain changed which dispute games it accepts, upgraded to fault proof version 13, or changed which older games it still accepts |
After the note, the steps continue from where you need to pick up. That's usually Prove, followed by a new challenge period.
Game type changes
A chain accepts only certain kinds of dispute game, called the respected game type. If the chain changes it, games of the old type stop counting, and so do proofs made against them. The steps show Fault proofs configuration changed, and you prove again against a game of the new type.
BoLD upgrade
Arbitrum chains that upgrade to BoLD, Arbitrum's newer dispute system, restart the wait for withdrawals already under way. The steps show BoLD upgrade and a new wait. There's no prove step on Arbitrum, so you just wait and then select Finalize.
Can I avoid a reset?
No. Upgrades are made by each chain's team, and Superbridge doesn't control them. Chains usually announce upgrades in advance on their own channels. If you can't risk a longer wait, choose a faster route. Faster alternatives
